I didn’t come remotely close to saying I read City of Ashes, although I was successful in reading its prior novel, City of Bones。 I’m not a fan of the whole “incest plot,” as introduced in the first book。 I find it interesting and unique, but I also feel that Cassandra Clare put it into her books because she knew that something so off-the-wall and uncomfortable would draw readers to review her book in a positive way, claiming it’s “different” and “shocking”。 Whether a plot twist is good or bad, I didn’t come remotely close to saying I read City of Ashes, although I was successful in reading its prior novel, City of Bones。 I’m not a fan of the whole “incest plot,” as introduced in the first book。 I find it interesting and unique, but I also feel that Cassandra Clare put it into her books because she knew that something so off-the-wall and uncomfortable would draw readers to review her book in a positive way, claiming it’s “different” and “shocking”。 Whether a plot twist is good or bad, it’s still a plot twist, which usually brings in more readers when they hear about a novel that shocks others。 Perhaps this is because they want to see if it’s something they can predict, I don’t know。 Fans of The Mortal Instruments (TMI) books and Cassandra Clare (the author) herself are massive defendants of this plot, (incest)as they say the main characters eventually find out they aren’t siblings… so it’s ok。 Still, I don’t understand why they would continue on their path as love interests while they fully believe they are siblings。 I guess I shouldn’t judge too harshly as a Game of Thrones fan, and it’s widely known that two of the main characters are lovers as well as siblings, but I’m a softie for them in comparison to Clary and Jace from TMI。 I honestly did love the idea behind The Mortal Instruments books, and I adored the movie based on the first book, but the mass of novels that went into the story didn’t have enough spark for me to push through and read them all。 It just wasn’t for me; however, I do highly recommend it to newer YA fantasy readers or anyone that seeks out something unique they can’t find in oh-so-many books。 。。。more

4。6Cassandra Clare is one of the writers that I would most recommend to middle- and high-school readers。 Her singular sense of wit, humor, and fantasy really can't be found anywhere else in YA。 Although this series ended on a slightly long-winded note, foreshadowing this author's tendency towards self-indulgence rather than tight writing in later series, I really loved everything especially in the first 1-3 books: Jocelyn, Clary, Luke, Jace, Isabel, Alec, Magnus, Simon; the beautiful city of Idr 4。6Cassandra Clare is one of the writers that I would most recommend to middle- and high-school readers。 Her singular sense of wit, humor, and fantasy really can't be found anywhere else in YA。 Although this series ended on a slightly long-winded note, foreshadowing this author's tendency towards self-indulgence rather than tight writing in later series, I really loved everything especially in the first 1-3 books: Jocelyn, Clary, Luke, Jace, Isabel, Alec, Magnus, Simon; the beautiful city of Idris; the incredible training that Shadowhunters get to fight evil and kill demons; the concept of parabatai, which strongly inspired my own feelings about friendship and romance during my developmental years; runes; the Brothers; vampires, werewolves, and so much else。 Finally, gay representation in this book was huge for someone who had learned the meaning of the word for the first time as a sixth-grader。Also, years later I always think about the line where Simon is described as "as sexually threatening as a goldfish"。 。。。more

I had stumbled upon The Mortal Instruments on Goodreads because it was reasonably popular。 It was a bit hard at first to read, but last week I tried again, and the series didn’t disappoint。When I checked, it said that the Infernal Devices, another series by the same author, was the prequel, so I read the first book of Infernal Devices。 Later, I realised there was a specific order I needed to read the books in。I shrugged my mistake off and tried to read the first book of the Mortal Instruments se I had stumbled upon The Mortal Instruments on Goodreads because it was reasonably popular。 It was a bit hard at first to read, but last week I tried again, and the series didn’t disappoint。When I checked, it said that the Infernal Devices, another series by the same author, was the prequel, so I read the first book of Infernal Devices。 Later, I realised there was a specific order I needed to read the books in。I shrugged my mistake off and tried to read the first book of the Mortal Instruments series。 But, by accident, I started reading the City of Ashes, the second book first。 By this time, I was so frustrated that I had just given up on the series until last week。The Mortal Instruments starts off with Clarissa “Clary” Fray (Fairchild) finding out that she is a Shadowhunter。 Shadowhunters are warriors that protect the world from demons。She meets Jace, Alec and Isabelle Lightwood, fellow Shadowhunters and, with their help, tries to find out where her missing mother is。 It was fascinating and kept me at the edge of my seat the whole time, like every other book in the series。The first book mainly focuses on Clary, but throughout the series, Jace, Alec, Isabelle, Clary’s best friend Simon, Maia, their werewolf friend, whom they meet in City of Ashes and Clary’s family’s stories were also told。I can’t tell you the synopsis of the other books without spoiling the series for you, so I’ll leave it at this。 I adored the series, although I would compare it to a roller-coaster。 It’s thrilling when you read it, but afterwards, it’s a bit dull。I would recommend it to people who love fantasy, mystery and romance。 The book is the perfect mix between these genres。 。。。more

The main characters were all annoying except Alec who was the only one who ever thought things through or at least tried to and not only rely on pure luck。 The weird psuedo incest side plot was in my opinion, gross and not needed but it's drama so whoo。 It was an entertaining read because it required no thinking at all, but I don't think I'd ever reread it willingly。 The main characters were all annoying except Alec who was the only one who ever thought things through or at least tried to and not only rely on pure luck。 The weird psuedo incest side plot was in my opinion, gross and not needed but it's drama so whoo。 It was an entertaining read because it required no thinking at all, but I don't think I'd ever reread it willingly。 。。。more

。。。more

does it count as having read these books if in an obsessive state i spent a weekend scanning through them to read every single scene that mentioned alec and magnus together and then compiled those into my very own malec ebook that i then reread any time i felt in the mood for it? i know that doesn’t count as reading THIS book specifically since they only have two scenes in it but by the end of the series i did feel like i’d read ENOUGH

it really draws you into the fantasy world that Clare has constructed like the plot isn't but the world is you know and the fact that it co-exists within the same world as ours makes me feel excited and awakens some little child inside of me。 The existence of Nephilim, half angel and half human, demons, werewolves, vampires, faeries and warlocks (the best addition I think because of Magnus who embodies everything good and glitter)。 I am a sucker for action and well constructed action sequences, this is definitely a little bit of my childhood reading preferences like Alex Rider and Enid Blyton that I carried with me so I think Clare definitely delivered on this front。 There is a fluid and smooth way that allows you to simply just transfer from page to page without losing focus with humour and wit which will make you laugh out loud either from the cringe or it actually being funny。 And to be quite honest, I think Clare touched on LGBTQI+ representation really well with two of her main characters, and this couple, as I've read all the other series, in my opinion is the best; they show exactly what a relationship should be like and have remained consistent throughout all 4 series。 There are tons of things I love about this series and one of them is definitely the lessons that is taught to us; family doesn't mean love, loving who you love is not a sin (I grew up in a very traditional home so this book series was my opening to the LGBTQI+ world), friendship, loyalty and fighting for what you believe in despite the consequences。 Let's start with Clary。 She has a lot of issues and falls very deeply into the "I'm not like other girls" trope many many times and she kind of hates on Izzy just for being prettier and better than her。 Though she did have her funny moments。 And Simon。。。oh my god。 To say the least he gave me an aneurysm in the first few books because he embodied the "jealous best friend" trope and ended up turning himself into a Daylighter and was essentially a wanna-be for most of the series but he did end up getting his shit together。 Jace was such a cliche too, that arrogant mysterious and somewhat conceited love interest and he often infuriated me, just his actions and the way he behaved but perhaps that was deliberate in Clare's writing。 Overall, the entire book series revolved around Jace and his perfect angelic features, his luscious golden hair and amber coloured eyes, his emotions chasing themselves across his face or his blonde hair floating around his head like a halo and Clary's fiery red hair like okay at some point this has got to be enough。 Also I think Clare made a big mistake in trying to find a male counterpart for all her female characters, both Clary (she was eventually going to end up with Jace we all knew) and Izzy who could've been legendary as a single warrior woman in her 12 inch heels (like how?!)。 Don't even get me started with Sebastian (hehe Ariel's under the sea companian) especially the fact that he wanted to date。。。 CLARY his own goddamn sister like he needs therapy。 In City of Heavenly Fire, Clary (the so called heroine of this novel who seemingly exhibits brave, strong characteristics which she does。。。very rarely) spent almost the ENTIRE book in an endless loop; 1。 obsess over Jace for like 50 pages2。 Jace gets angsty and things go cold 3。 Clary finds something relevant gets wounded 4。 She gets taken care of and Jace makes up with her5。 Repeat steps 1-4 for the rest of the bookI think that Clare tried to do too much with this series, it would have been much better served if it was a trilogy like her other series, TID, TDA and TLH。 I think the fact that City of Lost Souls was probably the one I liked the best because it gave a voice to the other side characters showed that I was very much sick of Jace and Clary and their constant star-crossed lover moments。 Anyways I think my rant is over now。 There were definitely things to like about this series but I would be lying if I said I actually enjoyed this, it was more like a lets finish this so we never have to touch it again。 "To love is to destroy, and that to be loved is to be destroyed" - Jace 。。。more
